If God were to stand before you today and ask, “Why should I let you into My Heaven?” what would you say?
Would you talk about being a good neighbor? Attending church? Trying your best to live an honest life?
If you are not entirely sure how to answer, or if you are relying on your good deeds, there is incredible news waiting for you. The Bible explicitly states that you do not have to live in uncertainty about your eternity:
“I write these things to you… so that you may know that you have eternal life.”
— 1 John 5:13
God wants you to have absolute confidence about your eternal home. Here is how the Scriptures explain the path to eternal certainty.
- Heaven Is a Free Gift
Many people assume Heaven operates like a reward program: if you perform enough good works, you earn your entry. But Scripture paints a completely different picture. Heaven is a gift, and like any true gift, it cannot be bought or earned through personal effort or religious performance.
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.”
— Ephesians 2:8-9
If we could earn our way into Heaven, salvation would be a wage, not a gift.
- We Cannot Save Ourselves
Why is it impossible to earn our way to Heaven? Because humanity faces a universal issue: sin.
“…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
— Romans 3:23
Sin is much more than major crimes or obvious wrongs. It includes anything we think, say, do, or fail to do that displeases God. If entry into Heaven required earning it through goodness, God’s standard for entry would be absolute perfection:
“Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
— Matthew 5:48
Measured against perfection, no human being can save themselves.
- God Is Love, but God Is Just
This creates a profound problem. On one hand, God loves us with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3) and has no desire to punish us (1 John 4:8). On the other hand, God is entirely just and cannot ignore sin:
“…Yet He does not leave the guilty unpunished…”
— Exodus 34:7
“The soul who sins is the one who will die.”
— Ezekiel 18:4
How can a loving God forgive us while remaining a perfectly just God who punishes sin?
- The Solution: Jesus Christ
God solved this dilemma Himself through His Son, Jesus Christ.
Jesus lived a completely sinless life on Earth. When He died on the cross, He willingly took the punishment for our sins upon Himself, paying our debt in full and rising from the dead to conquer death forever.
“We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”
— Isaiah 53:6
Jesus offers eternal life as a completely free gift. Receiving this gift means placing your trust in Him alone—relying on what He accomplished on the cross rather than what you try to achieve through your own efforts.
“…Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved…”
— Acts 16:31
- Receiving the Gift Today
Receiving salvation is simple and direct:
“If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
— Romans 10:9
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
— John 3:16
Think of it like jumping from a plane with a parachute. Everything may seem fine for a moment, but unless you make the decision to pull the ripcord, the outcome will be tragic.
If you are ready to place your faith in Jesus today, you can pray a prayer like this from your heart:
Dear God, I come to You admitting that I am a sinner. I believe that Your Son, Jesus, died on the cross to take away my sin. I also believe He rose from the dead, so I can be made righteous through faith in Him. Jesus, I choose to follow You, and I ask that You fill me with the power of the Holy Spirit. Thank You for saving me. Amen.
